The Story of Prophet Yaʿqub عليه السلام in the Qur'an
Published: 20 April 2026
Prophet Yaʿqub عليه السلام was not only the noble son of Prophet Ishaq عليه السلام and grandson of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, he was a patient and loving servant of Allah whose life was filled with tests, dua, and deep trust in his Lord. In the Qur’an, Allah highlights his concern for his children’s faith, his beautiful patience in the loss of his son, and his commitment to Tawheed, making his story a timeless guide for families and believers today.
“And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Yaʿqub, ‘O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims [in submission to Him].’”
— Surah Al‑Baqarah 2:132
The Blessed Family of Prophets
Yaʿqub عليه السلام was part of a chosen lineage of prophets, continuing the legacy of Ibrahim and Ishaq عليهم السلام by calling people to worship Allah alone. Through him, Allah raised a family from which many prophets and righteous men emerged, and his story is closely tied to that of his son Yusuf عليه السلام.
“And We gave to him [Abraham] Isaac and Jacob; all [of them] We guided. And Noah, We guided before.”
— Surah Al‑Anʿam 6:84
A Father, Twelve Sons, and a Special Dream
Allah blessed Yaʿqub عليه السلام with twelve sons, and he showed special affection to Yusuf عليه السلام because of his good character and a remarkable dream that hinted at Yusuf’s future honour. This love stirred jealousy in some of the brothers, planting the seeds of the trial that would change their family’s life.
“[Remember] when Yusuf said to his father, ‘O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon. I saw them prostrating to me.’”
— Surah Yusuf 12:4
The Shirt with False Blood and “Beautiful Patience”
Driven by jealousy, Yusuf’s brothers threw him into a well and returned to Yaʿqub عليه السلام with his shirt stained in false blood, claiming that a wolf had eaten him. Yaʿqub understood that their souls had pushed them towards a grave sin, but instead of exploding in anger, he turned to Allah with “beautiful patience,” choosing sabr and reliance over complaint.
“And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Yaʿqub] said, ‘Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting.’”
— Surah Yusuf 12:18
Tears, Grief, and Complaining Only to Allah
The years without Yusuf عليه السلام were filled with pain. Yaʿqub عليه السلام cried so much that he lost his eyesight, yet his heart never turned away from Allah. He teaches us that feeling sorrow does not contradict faith, as long as we direct our complaints and hopes to Allah alone.
“He said, ‘I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.’”
— Surah Yusuf 12:86
Hope That Never Faded: “Do Not Despair of Allah’s Mercy”
Even after many years, Yaʿqub عليه السلام never gave up on the possibility that Allah could still reunite him with Yusuf and his brother. When he sent his sons back to Egypt, he reminded them to keep searching and warned them never to despair of Allah’s mercy, a message for every believer facing long trials.
“O my sons, go and find out about Yusuf and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, none despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.”
— Surah Yusuf 12:87
Reunion, Restored Sight, and a Dream Fulfilled
When Yusuf عليه السلام finally revealed himself to his brothers, he forgave them and sent his shirt to be placed over his father’s face, by Allah’s permission restoring Yaʿqub’s eyesight and bringing years of grief to an end. Soon after, Yaʿqub came to Egypt with his family, where Yusuf honoured his parents, and the dream seen in Yusuf’s childhood was fulfilled before their eyes.
“And when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing.”
— Surah Yusuf 12:96
A Father’s Final Question: What Will You Worship After Me?
Even near death, Yaʿqub عليه السلام’s greatest concern was the faith of his children after he was gone. He gathered his sons and asked them what they would worship after him, and they responded with a pledge to worship the one God of their forefathers, showing that his efforts to preserve Tawheed in his family had succeeded.
“And [mention] when Yaʿqub said to his sons, ‘What will you worship after me?’ They said, ‘We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ismaʿil and Ishaq one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.’”
— Surah Al‑Baqarah 2:133
Lessons from the Story of Prophet Yaʿqub
The life of Prophet Yaʿqub عليه السلام shows us that a believer can be deeply emotional and still be firmly patient, holding on to Allah through every wave of grief and uncertainty. His beautiful patience, his refusal to despair, and his concern for his children’s iman teach us how to respond to family trials, long term hardships, and unanswered questions with sabr, tawakkul, and continuous dua.
“Indeed, whoever fears Allah and is patient, then surely Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.”
— Surah Yusuf 12:90
