The Story of Prophet Hud عليه السلام in the Qur'an
Published: 27 April 2026
Prophet Hud عليه السلام was sent to a proud and powerful nation called ʿAd, a people known for their strength, impressive constructions, and flourishing civilization, yet whose hearts drifted far from humility and gratitude to Allah. Their story in the Qur’an warns any community that begins to equate material success with divine approval, ignoring repeated reminders to return to sincere worship and justice.
“And to ʿAd [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah you have no deity other than Him. Will you not then be mindful [of Him]?’” (Al‑Aʿraf 7:65)
A Noble Prophet Sent to a Mighty People
Like Nuh and Salih عليهما السلام, Hud عليه السلام is remembered in the Qur’an as a prophet who stood with courage and sincerity before a dominant society that had turned away from pure tawhid, calling them back to the worship of Allah alone. He was from among his own people, familiar with their language, culture, and aspirations, yet once he began calling them to abandon idols and repent, the elites dismissed him as misguided and insignificant.
“The chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said, ‘Indeed, we see you in foolishness, and we think you are one of the liars.’ He said, ‘O my people, there is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds.’” (Al‑Aʿraf 7:66–67)
ʿAd’s Strength, Architecture, and Growing Arrogance
The people of ʿAd were not a weak tribe on the margins of history. Allah had granted them physical strength, influence, and lands where they built lofty structures and proud monuments. Instead of these gifts leading them to shukr (gratitude) and humility, many among them became intoxicated with their power, boasting about their might and imagining that no force could ever overpower them.
“Do they not see that Allah, who created them, is stronger than them in power? But they continued to reject Our signs.” (Fussilat 41:15)
Hud عليه السلام reminded them that their stature and buildings were not proof of greatness, but a trust from Allah and a test of how they would respond with obedience and justice, or with oppression and pride.
Calling ʿAd Back to Tawhid and Istighfar
Hud عليه السلام called his people with clarity and gentleness: worship Allah alone, stop wronging others, and seek forgiveness, promising that sincere repentance would open the doors of renewal and increased blessings. He did not ask them for any payment or worldly reward, showing that his dawah was purely for Allah, yet many insisted on their idols and traditions even when they knew they had no real proof.
“O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are but inventors [of falsehood].” (Hud 11:50)
“And O my people, seek forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength upon your strength. So do not turn away as criminals.” (Hud 11:52)
The Arrogant Response: Mockery and Denial
Instead of reflecting, many of the leaders of ʿAd responded with mockery, claiming that Hud عليه السلام had brought no clear proof and accusing him of madness or possession. They were so attached to their idols and social status that they preferred to label the messenger “foolish” rather than question their own way of life and admit they had gone astray.
“They said, ‘O Hud, you have not brought us any clear proof, and we are not about to leave our gods on your word, nor are we believers in you.’” (Hud 11:53)
Hud عليه السلام replied with firmness and tawakkul, making it clear that he relied upon Allah alone and was not afraid of their threats or their numbers.
“Indeed, I have relied upon Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but that He holds it by its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.” (Hud 11:56)
The Wind of Destruction and the Fate of ʿAd
When ʿAd persisted in arrogance and openly challenged Hud عليه السلام to bring the punishment he warned of, the door of mercy closed, and the decree of Allah came into effect. What they first saw as a promising cloud turned into a furious, merciless wind sent over several days, uprooting their pride and leaving their once mighty bodies lying lifeless on the ground.
“So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune, to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in worldly life but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.” (Fussilat 41:16)
“And as for ʿAd, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind which He imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days consecutively, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.” (Al‑Haqqah 69:6–7)
At the same time, Allah saved Hud عليه السلام and those who believed with him, showing that even when an entire civilization collapses, sincere iman and obedience remain a shield for those who hold fast to their Lord.
“So We saved him and those with him by mercy from Us, and We eliminated those who denied Our signs and they were not believers.” (Al‑Aʿraf 7:72)
Hud’s Sincerity and Lessons for Every Comfortable Society
The Qur’an presents Hud عليه السلام as a prophet who fulfilled his responsibility completely calling, warning, advising, and bearing the harm of his people trusting that his reward was with Allah alone, whether they accepted or rejected the message. His words echo the reality that guidance is a gift we either honour through repentance and obedience or push away through pride, and that rejecting it harms only ourselves, not Allah or His messengers.
“Indeed, I call Allah to witness, and you bear witness, that I am free from whatever you associate with Him other than Him. So plot against me all together then do not give me respite.” (Hud 11:54–55)
The story of Prophet Hud عليه السلام and the people of ʿAd teaches us that towering buildings, economic growth, and military strength are not signs that Allah is pleased with a nation they are tests that can end at any moment if used in defiance of His commands. Their reaction to repeated reminders shows that no sign or argument will benefit a heart that refuses to humble itself, while even a small group of believers can be honoured and protected if they cling to tawhid, gratitude, and justice in the middle of a proud and forgetful society.
