
Surah Al Fatiha with English Meaning

Most of us recite Surah Al Fatiha every single day in our salah, but often without really knowing what each verse is saying to us. In this short blog, we’ll go through the surah ayah by ayah and learn its simple English meaning so that our recitation can become a real dua from the heart, not just words on the tongue.
1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
2. ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
All praise is for Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
3. ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
The Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
4. مَـٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Master of the Day of Judgement.
5. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
6. ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Guide us to the straight path.
7. صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
The path of those You have blessed, not of those who have earned Your anger nor of those who went astray.
A Few Things to Know About Surah Al Fatiha
- It is called Umm Al-Qur’an (the Mother of the Qur’an) and As-Sab‘ Al-Mathani (the Seven Oft-Repeated).
- The Prophet ﷺ described it as a unique surah, unlike anything revealed in the previous scriptures.
- Our salah is not valid without reciting Al Fatiha in every rak‘ah, which shows how central it is in a Muslim’s daily life.
